Exam Prep: 4 Things NOT to do When Prepping for an Exam

Whatever the test you have ahead, you are about to dive into exam prep. And, while there’s so much advice telling you how to do it, no one tells you the things not to do ahead of the biggest test of your life.
Well, we’ve got a few bits of advice. Take heed of the following advice for the most successful test-taking experience possible.
- Don’t Cram the Night Before
With a big exam on the horizon, you might feel as though a minute of rest is a minute wasted. The truth is, though, staying up and cramming for a test is usually the wrong way to play it.
Experts say that our memories consolidate while we sleep. Plus, with the right amount of sleep, we have an easier time concentrating. You won’t do well on a test without your memories and focus, will you?
So, get the amount of sleep that makes you feel refreshed — for most adults, that’s seven to nine hours’ worth of shut-eye. Your best bet is to start studying well in advance of your test so there’s no need to cram in the first place. That way, you can rest easy the night before the test.
- Don’t Just Read Your Notes
Everyone studies differently, so you should find the method that works best for you, of course. In most cases, though, passive studying won’t do anything to help you.
Passive studying means you simply read over your notes, nothing more. The majority of studiers won’t retain enough information from this method. So, try flashcards or another method that helps you remember details and test yourself ahead of the exam.
The more active your studying, the better your results will be.
- Don’t Chug Coffee
You can have a cup of joe before your exam, especially if you do so every morning.
However, don’t underestimate the power of water and proper hydration pre-test. A lack of water can decrease your energy levels and leave you feeling unfocused, too.
Get in the habit of drinking water while you study to keep yourself refreshed. Bring a bottle of water with you to the exam to reap the benefits as you take the test.
- Don’t Go It Alone
You’re here looking for test-taking advice, and there are some good tips to consider. But we aren’t your only exam-prep resource.
You can also rely on your fellow students or test-takers to help you prepare. So, don’t be afraid to form a study group and get the job done together.
Having classmates help you means you have someone who can clarify a topic that has confused you. On the other hand, you might have the chance to explain a concept to a fellow student, too. This type of repetition will only help you learn.
And studying with others ensures you’re on the right page about what you need to know and prepare for the exam ahead.
